DOG #2- Kobuck: Arrived in July 2010- yeast between two toes. Haircut on Friday, April 1st.  Flaky skin on back, NO sores.  Not itchy before bath. Real itchy after his bath yesterday with a hypoallergenic shampoo.  Conditioned well today and dried again.  He has yeasty feet with red staining... shaved between pads and around back toe pads real short, washed with Duoxo, using pads.  Occasionally pees on the back of his legs.  Changed this dog's food to Blue Buffalo Basics (turkey) over the weekend.  (Arrived on Wellness- Lamb (diarrhea- dog tested positive for Salmonella and required antibiotics), switched to Eagle Pack, tried Wellness again (diarrhea again), then Chicken Soup, now Blue Buffalo Basics-Turkey)

April 4- Example of his breathing at rest. Hot areas and scratching.
Doesn't feel as well as he did.

Acted like he had a UTI Friday night... peeing only a little bit several times in a row.   Encouraged him to drink a lot Friday night (ostrich in water). Dropped off a urine sample to vet on Saturday.  Results back on Monday... Normal.  Only thing noticed was bilirubin  but said to be an insignificant amount.

10 April 3- Itchy... scratching neck and shoulders a lot.  Finding small tufts of hair he's pulled out. Discomfort breathing at times.  Lies down more outside when playing again.  More sores appearing. Some red spots/bumps, a couple crusty (both on neck).  8pm- Gave bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.  Took outside to potty.  Gave final meal at 10pm.

At 10:20pm- scratching the heck out of the right
side of his head by his ear, then went to sleep.

Shoulder area and top of back.
10 April 2nd- Itchy, scratching.  Skin is breaking out again.  Started breathing harder at times like there's discomfort.

Revolution applied.  Spoke with MSU... call Dr. Rosser Monday.

Using Duoxo Pad between pads daily.  Ask whether he can be tested for other environmental allergies other than those already tested for.  Resin, rubber, vinyl, plastic, oak, leather, cotton.  Bacteria sensitivity?

Scratching by right ear again.   Scratching neck again... and again... and again.
7:30pm panting (had been sleeping on the couch for the past hour).  Even sat down to scratch his face when he was out to relieve himself.  He doesn't do that.  He's real itchy.

Appointment at MSU on March 30th, 2011- Report
  • Using home made laundry detergent, window spray, dish soap, bleach, put black vinyl flooring back down in shop (too slippery without it).
  • 6 cups ostrich + 6 cups rutabagas daily.  4am, 11am, 4pm, 8-9pm
  • Poop is VERY dark, almost black.
  • Cephalexin 1250mg BID x 21 days; Hydroxozyne 100mg BID x 30 days
  • We spray him with water when he itches... it helps to sooth the itch and hot areas.  Not having to do it as often now.
  • Still gets hot areas but recently, they don't seem to be quite so physically hot.
  • His temperament has improved... he just seems happier, much less grumbly.
  • Feeding him in a room of his own, sleeps there too.
  • Water dish issue has been corrected... the water is only put down when he's in his room.
  • Spoke with breeder about a month ago.  No other dogs are affected, some are showing.
  • What shampoo should we use and how often?
  • Is his weight ok?
  • Prescriptions are almost gone... stop or continue?
  • Some discoloration between foot pads.
  • Can we put down new vinyl tile?
  • Can we put rubber back rugs down again? (dog with hip dysplasia)
  • Do you still think it may be a food allergy?
4(am)
6(pm)
March 29th- Trimmed his beard and washed his beard with Mighty White shampoo.  Late morning he was breathing a bit harder, also scratched neck after dinner.

* But then in the early evening he was scratching his ear flap more intensely.  And his head.
Washed his floor with Pinesol.

  6 March 28th
6 March 27th- Plucked his hears.  Biogroom ear powder.
  8 March 26th
  8 March 25th Chewing sides
9 March 24th-  Still itchy, a little less so.
10 March 23rd- ITCHY  Chewing intensely.  Rewashed with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS 3% shampoo.
8 March 23rd- ITCHY

#1 and #2 BEFORE bath,  #3 after, when drying.

7 March 22nd-  Flaky, flaky but skin looks pretty good.  Chewing inside left leg.  Bath with TRESemme shampoo/conditioner, blow dried.  (Breeder recommended.)  One red spot noted on right hip/thigh (where darker hair is).

  6 March 21st-
7 March 20th- Same.  Times he's good with brief times during the day where he's chewing and scratching.
  7 March 19th-
7* March 18th- Itchy at times.  Letting him scratch uninterrupted sometimes to see if he'll stop in a reasonable amount of time as long as he isn't damaging his skin like before.

Note: It's been one whole week since his last bath and his coat is NOT "polluted".  The hairs are still standing up!  It had always been that the hair would flatten on his rump.  If you looked closely at the undercoat it was kind of sticking together.  Cool :)  After I brushed him out there were lots of tiny white particles though.  He's still on the antibiotic and antihistamine but this appears to be an improvement!  He doesn't NEED to have a bath on day 7.

*But after dinner he was scratching the heck out of his head.  His ear fringes itched.

The first time in a long time that he roughhoused IN the house with Kobuck.  Got that wild streak where the 90 pound boy scampers through the house.  Naught boy. :)

  7 March 17th
6 March 16th  No longer wearing a shirt.  Still has times he's scratching intensely and we have to stop him but he's not making his skin bleed.
7 March 15th
7 March 14th
  8 March 13th
7 March 12th  I found a couple of scabs on his head.
8 March 11th  #7 Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo.  Little red spots inside bottom lip on both sides.  Blood test was fine except for slightly low white cell count.
  8 March 10th
7 March 9th- Chewing back right hock and inside of back left leg near foot.  Put long socks on him to protect his skin.  Scratching but not as bad as the past two days.  Not scratching his head like he had been... topknot is staying up.

Back, left leg.
10 March 8th- Chewing, scratching.  Breathing harder, hot areas at times.

Water dish in his room.  Will stay out in shop with Jim during the day so the others can have free access to water.

PM- very itchy.  There are two videos.
(click "Play List" to view both)

Chewed bottom (in video)

10 March 7th- Hot, hot area on neck... then started scratching.  Had been licking back hock- dried spit with re area.   Licking left front foot.  PM- After dinner- TERRIBLY ITCHY.

Oh, nooo... the water dish.  The community water dish may be causing a problem- dog food contamination?

Brushed him out at 7:30pm.  Ear fringes weren't as itchy during the day but at night, they were again.  During the day, I was able to rub the ear fringes without having him scratch with his back legs.  But it was back as I was brushing him out tonight.  Breathing funny like the brushing was making him itch more.

Earlier in the day.

Sores on back :*(

Chewed left hock, made it bleed.

8 March 6th- His head is really itchy today.  Scratching it a lot on the top/left side.  Must have had to put his topknot up 10 times today.  Tonight he was scratching the left side of his neck toward his chest and left it red.
7 March 5th- Noticed HOT area on back of neck shortly after eating.
7 March 4th- Not as itchy today.  Picked up Revolution and applied.  Breathing better again but still getting real hot areas and itchy.

Right hock and inside right leg.
Dog spit on the sheet, not pee!
8 March 3rd- Last antibiotics with AM meal.  Bad day... breathing harder, could tell he didn't feel good at times.  Licking, chewing, scratching.  Took in for hw test and will start monthly Revolution tomorrow after test results come back.  Lost 2 pounds since last vet visit so boosted mid-day and evening snack from 1 cup O+R (2 cups total) to 1 1/2 cups O+R (3 cups total) ostrich+rutabaga.  So from 10 cups daily to 12 cups (6 cups ostrich + 6 cups rutabagas).

Tops of two toes were red but didn't photograph well.
8 March 2nd- Chewing on feet.  Scratching head (pulled out hair on toes). Bath #6 tonight with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo.  10 minute soak as usual.

Bathed and dried by 7pm. Itchy.  Put a shirt on him.  At 8pm, he had an VERY hot area on left flank and he started chewing the area... then the heat dissipated.
Was lying on the couch (leather covered with cotton quilt).

7 March 1st- Licking front foot, behind leg by the top toe.
7 February 28th- A pretty good day today.  He laid down on the floor in the kitchen and flopped on his side tonight... I noticed his breathing was easy... slow and normal.  The antibiotics or the change in diet?  Whatever it is, I am so relieved to see this.  Jim ordered more ostrich today... 120 pounds.  Still have 56 pounds left but we need to feed it for 3 months minimum.  2 1/2+ pounds per day plus rutabagas.

Used a vaporizer to add moisture to the air in the kitchen and Bumble's room one day.

8 February 27th- Itchy again today... chest, neck and waist.  You can see the biting on his side (we marks).  But I believe the labored breathing has stopped.  Still pants but NOT breathing like he's distressed.

Trying to get him out on walks again, a few times a week, with more confident dogs.  He did well today with Emma.  He hugs too close to me when we walk to the point of tripping me up... herding to redirect my forward motion? It's gotten better over the past 6 months but he still does it to some extent.  I found today that if I say to him in a happy voice, "Go get that dog!" (what I say to the dogs to initiate play in the backyard) will encourage him to walk out front with Emma.

9 February 26th  About the same.  Boosted snacks from 3/4 cup each O+R to 1 cup each O+R.

Spot on left healed 3/2/11
9 February 25th- Itchier today.  Chewing at his waist.  Bath #5 tonight with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo.   Bloody spot on left neck.  Small red areas possibly from chewing... 1 spot that might be a sore??  All on LEFT side.  Going to keep a shirt or jean-coat on him again.

Not much energy around house but has fun outside.  A good sport about the 2x a week baths... gets in the tub when asked to.

7 February 24th  Hot areas on skin, itchy.
7 February 23  Hot areas on skin, itchy.
  7 February 22

A 10 minute soak in his shampoo, a thorough rinse and dried with is favorite drier (the quiet one!). He hates the noisy one... he'll curl up in a ball.  But he gets all excited when he sees the cage dryer and scratches at it.
A change of sheets and blanket and he was ready for bed.
7 February 21st- Skin appears to be pretty clear of sores though red areas where he's chewing on his hocks. However quite itchy at times.  Lots of scratching over chest/elbows.... chewing right hip and hocks, licking tops of feet... twice today. Bath #4 with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo tonight.  Stool fine.  Has transitioned over to new diet without any problems.

Note: Seems more itchy before and after meals.

7 February 20th
  7 February 19th- START 100% Ostrich & Rutabaga Diet.  4 1/2 cups ostrich with 4 1/2 cups rutabaga.  3 cups AM... 1 1/2 cups 11-12 noon... 3 cups PM... 1 1/2 cups bedtime.  (9 cups daily!)
Ostrich company said the large amount of food (usually a 1200 calorie diet, this will be over 2,200) is to likely to push the toxins from his body (the doctor originally said lymph nodes and tissues).  So we need to feed approximately 2 1/4 pounds of ostrich per day (plus rutabagas) for 90 days.  The dude has a $10 a day ostrich habit! :)

Edges of ears are itchy.  Combed out his ears and kept scratching.

7 February 18th- Skin looks good due to the antibiotic... continues to be itchy and hot at times.
7 February 17th- Bath #3 with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo.
7 February 16th- Transitioning over to Ostrich and Rutabaga Diet.
The ostrich has arrived!

Moved Bumble back into his old bedroom for feeding and sleeping. Queen bed, Allure vinyl flooring.

7 February 15th- Chewing back left hock again and scratching ears.  Ears are getting waxy... small cuts from scratching.  Cleaned.
7 February 14th-  Bath #2 with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo.
6 February 13th- Area above nose pale but gums are good.
8 February 12th- Introducing rutabaga to diet.
8 February 11th- Red area on top of head the size of a nickle.  Needs a shirt due to scratching.  Total shave down except for head- #6 blade body, #3 on legs.  Scissored head.  Bath #1 with Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% Shampoo.

February 10th- Dr. Rosser feels 90% certain that Bumble's problem is a food allergy!!  Treatment- Cephalexin 1250mg BID x 21 days; Hydroxozyne 100mg BID x 30 days; Duoxo Chlorhexidine 3% PS Shampoo 2x per week for 3 weeks.  Home cooked ostrich and rutabagas for 90 days and Revolution for hw preventative when we start it again this spring.  Ostrich arrives on Wednesday.  Report
