Retest Thyroid- August 5th, 2011

5 June 3  Scratching head.  Topknot keeps coming down do to it.

Kaytee Reference Note: Diarrhea started Thursday.  Told to give her stomach a rest... no food for 12 hours.  Restarted with rice and chicken. Went to diarrhea/vomiting Friday.  Vet Friday AM... in the past she has declined quickly. IV fluids (beginning to dehydrate).  5mg of metroclopramide (reglin) 3x daily, 100mg Simplicef 1x daily.  Immodium 4mg 3x daily. (MDR1-normal/normal).  1 tsp. water every 15 minutes (about 5ml)... if it stays down, start with 1 tsp of food.

4 June 2    START: Thyroid pill in small rutabaga cube.  Would rather have the tiny dab of peanut butter that Emma got.  Called MSU as requested, sent email as discussed.
3 June 1 Used dryer... skin looks really good.  Only one collarette found- mid-chest.  A little more itchy in the evening but a good day!

Corresponded with Dr. Dodds about Bumble's diagnosis and breeder's view that it was "still just seasonal allergies".  Dr. Rosser and Dr. Dodds indicate this is NOT the case... he's hypothyroid as indicated by the high TSH.

8 May 31  Happy Birthday, BB!  3 years old today.  Sores almost gone but still very itchy.  Scratching armpits and chest more today... scratching head again, chewing legs.  Warm areas on skin.  Soloxine given on empty stomach in small piece of rutabaga.

Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal was recommended for itching.  Told to pour over him for 10 minutes, don't rinse, and let dry.
Tried a poultice of old fashioned oatmeal in a nylon to see if it would help with the itching on his left side only.  If it doesn't help, I'll get the Aveeno and do the bathtub thing.

7 May 30  Scratching armpits and chest more today.  More expressive eyes, better endurance, playing more.
7 May 29  Scratching chest, armpits.   Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.
7 May 28   Scratching chest, armpits.  His sides are red from scratching but no longer scratching his head.  Noticed his ears are moving more, his face looks happier, more expressive.  Before he seemed so deadpan.  Starting to snag kitchen towels off the table again so he can play with them!!  That hasn't happened in so long.  Running, playing more.

Wondering now if the reason the other food trials never worked was because his thyroid had been failing longer than I knew.  Coat is feeling gunky/polluted again... bath tomorrow.

7 May 27   Continued scratching of head, chest, armpits.  He's sleeping in new places.  He would sleep behind the chair or in front of my desk... more out of the way.  I found him in front of the refrigerator... sleeping in the middle of the living room floor.
8 May 26  More animated but still scratching head, chest, armpits a lot.

Can one dose make him more animated?

8 May 25

DIAGNOSIS-
HYPOTHYROIDISM

Started Soloxine this morning.  Gave 0.5mg.  Will pick up 0.9mg.  CORRECTION- Give 0.9mg am and 0.9mg pm on empty stomach.  1 hour before meals and at least 3 hours after.  Ok to stuff inside a rutabaga cube but not in ostrich.

MSU Thyroid Profile
Test Results

Scratching the heck out of his head and a very red area on his right-back side.  VERY itchy. Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.

Trimmed legs/feet shorter this evening.
8 May 24  Scratching like heck.  Talked with Dr. Rosser this morning.

Changes-
START Cephalexin 1250mg  2x daily for 21 days
Douxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo 2x per week
TriChlor4 pads on sores and prepuce
Hydroxozine until August/September 100mg 2x daily
Redo intradermal allergy testing in August/September
STOP Royal Canin Rabbit & Potato
Keep on ostrich/rutabaga.  Will find an other protein that can be purchased in bulk and will be given a balanced home cooked diet for life long feeding.

8 May 23 Scratching the heck out of his armpits, head, behind ears and neck this morning.
6 May 22  Shirt again because he's scratching his right side and neck too hard.  More sores found... new ones on chest, inside left front leg, on left side. Now scratching other side of head. Used the dog dryer (no heat) so I can better monitor his skin.  Using TriChlor 4 wipes on sores when found.

Noticing that topknot is out each morning now because he's scratching his head.  Seems to be backsliding but was probably doing so before the food change (sores in armpits)

5 May 21  First thing out of his room- wiped down areas with TriChlor4 pads- armpits and front-left chest because he started scratching.  Hot area on left side of neck after wiping down with pads. This was before breakfast. Had to put a shirt on him because of scratching.

Noticed redness down back of bottom... thought it was a skin related.  Turned out to be blood likely due to a too fast food change but saw on-call vet anyway.  Metronidazole prescribed for 5 days.  Go back to all ostrich/rutabaga until we talk with Dr. Rosser.

Transition was started Thursday on way home from MSU.  Started at 1/2 cup Royal Canin Rabbit/Potato per meal Thursday and Friday.

5 May 20th  Scratching armpits and chest first thing out of his room.  Chewing on black spot on right hip... hasn't done that in some time now.  Scratching head.  Called MSU.  Message to start Hydroxozine again.  Wiping down areas with TriChlor4 pads.  Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.

Had checked his skin thoroughly while drying him on the 17th and hadn't seen them.
May 19  Visit at MSU- Due to his nervousness, his skin turns red.  More areas of sores were visible like in the armpit areas on both sides.  Was asked by the student if the area above his nose was always that red.

START Rabbit and Potato Kibble
Stop Hydroxozine
Start 4% pads on areas of scratching.
Continue 2x weekly baths with Douxo.

Left chest area- biting

Top right side of head- scratching like crazy. Wiped down with Duoxo pad.
4 May 18  Scratching and biting at left chest area.  Scratching the top right side of his head.  Panting more today.

Totally insignificant!! LOL A few tiny blotchy spots inside-front
of front right leg.  That's all I found today when drying him.

3 May 17  Bath at 9am with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.  Skin looks really good.  Previous spots are healed or healing now.

 no longer chews it!Better endurance
GREATLY improved temperament- happier, no longer lashing out at other dogs, more playful, wiggles more.
No true hot areas anymore... still warm at times but only occasionally.
Seldom has the "discomfort-breathing" and if he's breathing harder, it's not like before.
Less chewing, less scratching
Can often run hands down sides, back or rub ends of ears without him "peddling".
The area on his right hip that has the darker hair (see picture below) has NO sores!!
He would chew his right hock as a puppy... we thought it was a nervous habit... no longer chewing.

Any ideas for a communal water station that would prevent him from getting food particles?  A fountain (non-circulating)?

Are these red spots normal?

3 May 16 Scratching both shoulders today- twice by 11am.  Test results negative for Lupus.  T4 is low but it might be due to whatever has been going on.  Rechecking thyroid panel through MSU.  Scratching the heck out of the right side of his head tonight... twice.  Back looked flaky.

Dude... wake up! Grooming is so stressful. :)
Shaved between pads and ground nails.
4 May 15  Chewing on left knee, front right leg... chewing more, panting.  Happy but lying down more today.  We were working outside... he ran and played a little, then laid down most of the time.  Played in the house though.  Shaved between pads.

Comparison of sore from yesterday to late tonight.  Ouch.
Wiped with Duoxo pad.
3 May 14  Good day as far as temperament and energy.  Cool and rainy day.  Chewed sore on left knee briefly... wiped with Duoxo pad.  Scratched chest/shoulders/armpits briefly.

Emma and Bumble haven't really played together in the house together in so long.  Yes, they'd play tug with a toy but not actually wrestle around.  I think when his skin problem became so bad, she was seeing that his tolerance level was low.  She's usually a dog that will avoid conflict.  Today was another amazing day and special for the two of them. I can't remember the last time the two of them wrestled around and nibbled on each other.  It's been so long that with his size now, he has to be reminded to be careful (like putting his front feet on her back... eeks!).

After bath... yup, he was
getting ready to scratch.
4 May 13  He was licking so I looked and found a new sore on knee, inside left leg.  Scratching shoulders. Still waiting for test results for Lupus.  Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.  Breathing harder tonight.

New sore, left knee-
had been licking it.

Some kind of spot next
to back toe on front left foot.

A couple of new sores on back
of back right leg, above hock.

Current appearance
of back right hock.

3 May 12  Another very active day!  Never laid down outdoors today.  Videos of play... see play list.

Chew-chew-chewing on a Jolly Ball handle. The boy LOVES his Jolly Balls.  And sleeping tonight...was on the floor, now on the bed.

5 May 11  Shaved his body, belly, chest, inside back legs, neck down with a #3 blade.  He laid down at the end... has started lying down during baths too but he does have to soak for 10 minutes. He's always done this crazy thing when I spray his head with water, his back end starts to sway like he's going to collapse.  I pat him on the butt and tell him to straighten up.  I now just let him lie down.  Blew him off with dryer after his haircut instead of washing.  Runs and plays outdoors but lies down after brief play.  But chased Kobuck across the yard.  Then he was done, he didn't want to play anymore.  Went in the house, laid down on my bed for about 1/2 hour but never put his head down.  I look at him sometimes and think there's something seriously wrong... and other times like he's going to be fine.   This has been going on for so long now, I no longer know what's normal for him

Warmer areas on neck.  Scratching head. Sores in ears look to be subsiding or at least not as red... same with rash inside right leg.  He licked it once that I could tell.  Except for the low endurance (as always) and panting (reason I shaved him down), he appears to be doing ok still.  His attitude is good but not much energy.  And it's a rainy, cool day... around 60 degrees.

He's finished playing.  You can see the spot through his
hair on the inside of his back right leg... it's a little pink.

Inside right back leg.

5 May 10 A.M. Chewing inside of right hind leg and scratching armpits.  Drank out of the pack water dish AGAIN!!  Have to figure out how to keep him out of it now that the weather's turning warm.  His lovely coat hides so much... I think it's going to have to come off.

Right ear- new sores.

Requested Lupus Testing- ANA, CBC, protein/creatinine
(Results will determine whether biopsies will be done.)

All spots found on right hip.
Right hock still has some discoloration on the skin.

5 May 9 Bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.  Found 5 spots that had at some point been sores but were now healing.  Again, all were on right hip. Another more subdued play day.  Scratching more tonight.  Drank out of the pack water dish.

3 May 8  More subdued today, less playful but happy.  Scratching shoulder/sides a couple of times today.  Roughhousing in the living room with Kobuck.  Playing outside, was lying down more again.

Bath  picture from May 4th.  The others from May 7th.
3 May 7   What an amazing day!  It was so obvious that he's improving.  He's initiating play, his endurance level is increasing and his temperament is improving.  I can see it in his face that the happy dog is returning to me.  I was able to put his topknot up while he was playing and he didn't growl or go after the dog he was playing with.  I haven't been able to do this in months.  He did scratch his head intensely late last night... I had to stop him and rub his head... he went back to sleep.
5 May 6  Scratching shoulder/side areas, licking top of feet. (Early a.m.)   But later in the day was good!  He did the Bumble bounce with Kaytee and initiated play.  I later took out a jump and he was having a blast jumping over it for baked ostrich treats.  My boy is coming back to me...
  5 May 5
5 May 4 Nighttime bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.

Hiding behind a bush
4 May 3 Top of head itchy where tick was.  Otherwise a good day as far as itching.  Chewing at right flank, with some heat but less intense.
6 May 2 Applied Revolution at 2am.  GROSS.  Scratching head and found an American Dog Tick on top/left of Bumbles head... not engorged.  Removed and wiped area down with Douxo wipe.  Revolution is said to control them.  We've had an ungodly amount of rain and also brought in store-bought wood chips for the first time in several years.  This is the first time we've ever seen ticks here.
6 May 1 Top of head very itchy.
7 April 30  Very itchy head and behind hears today.  Could it be from the Honest Kitchen fed to the other dogs?
6 April 29  Nighttime bath with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo and dried.  Initiating play with Kobuck and playing longer.  45 minutes playing in the living room.  Endurance and temperament have improved.  Bumble was licking Kobuck's ears and Kobuck was licking Bumble's ears.  Note:  Fed other dogs Honest Kitchen fish formula... (see April 30th and itchy ears)
