10 | August 28-
Bath today with Duoxo. Collerettes on
chest (3). Sore on belly, red spot in ear, still has that red
sore/bump on prepuce. Breathing harder as of yesterday but still
good energy. Itchy, chewing.
Sores are minor for now... but they
are still sores.

August 26- Better energy. On the 50/50 diet without supplements. And happy!! He’s wiggling more, gets to his feet when we open his bedroom door, we don’t have to pester him to stand up. Eating every meal well again. Sores gone, rash resolved. Still very itchy today... left a red patch on right shoulder. Went over him with the dog dryer and found NO sores, just red area from scratching. Appointment with board certified nutritionists. Diet was a little low in protein. | |
| August 24- Bath today with Duoxo. Plucked ears... about half... and put a little Mometomax in ears. Skin looks good but found a few tiny bumps/sores in ears. sigh... | ||
![]() #1 Top front of right thigh, #2 Right next to #1 (resolved), #3 Back right hock, #4 inside front right at top. |
August 23 Refused 10:30
snack and late night snack. Washed down inside of right leg with
Douxo. Noted all lesions.
2 pounds of ostrich to 2 pounds of potato. Not eating all of it. Ostrich has 440 calories per pound according to the Black Wing Company. |
|
| August 22 Ate all meals today. Itchy still. | ||
![]() |
August 21 Refused early
meal but ate 2/3 of new mix at 9am after i put 1/4 Canidae biscuit
on top. Fed new mix again at 4pm and ate everything. Added about
3/4 cup more and ate that too.
VERY ITCHY... neck, shoulders... chewed butt again. So is it due to the biscuits or due to the same old stuff. Sprayed with witch hazel. Call from Dr. J... yes, on a Sunday! Blood work was totally normal. Thyroid level through this lab was 2.8. Was going to skip the snack at 9pm. He was standing at the Dutch door after I finished drying Kobuck. Let them all out, he went right to his room and stood there waiting. So I gave him 50% boiled potatoes and 50% cooked ostrich... about 1 1/2 cups. Ate it all and cleaned the bowl. Back to 50% ostrich and 50% potato... holding off on supplements until I know what to give him. Ostrich bone |
|
![]() Back right hock. Two spots on prepuce and blackheads. |
August 20th Would not
eat his potato and ostrich mix. Got up at 4am and fed him 1 pound
of raw ostrich. Peeled a potato, thinly sliced, put safflower oil
in frying pan and fried. Would not eat.
Gave him 1/2 a Canidae biscuit and ate it immediately. Looked at BalanceIt site and diets. Instead going to contact Tufts. They have 2 board certified nutritionists. Pick up bloodwork and thyroid tests since January and will schedule an telephone consultation. This is just nuts. At 11am, gave him is regular potato ostrich meal... ate maybe 1/4 to 1/3. Cooked up a potato, cooked pork loin and ostrich with more water. (Peeing but not as much as usual). Ate part, hand fed the rest. Cooked up 1/4 pound pork, 3/4 pound ostrich (added at end, stirred and immediately turned off). 3/4 pound of potatoes + asparagus and zucchini. Will feed last two times to today. 3 SORES/RASH
Much better tonight after bath. Ate well. 1/4 pork, 3/4 ostrich, 1/4 asparagus, zucchini, 3/4 potato. Thinly slice potatoes, cut other veggies into chunks and add diced pork. Boil until potatoes are soft. Turn off, stir in ostrich. |

August 19th- Not eating
right at all, low energy. Appointment to see Dr. J. Blood work.
Told her we were told the MSU balanced diet is too low in protein if
it's 1 part ostrich to 5 parts potato (or rutabaga). 16.6%
protein. Glad we had boosted it a little prior to this. Feeding
raw ostrich to try to get him eating.
Smoked Large Ostrich Femur Bone- Naturally smoked 6-9inches long & perfect for a larger dog who needs a healthier natural way to be active and keep their teeth clean.Non allergenic ostrich meat & bones are recommended by many Allergy Veterinarians. No hormones, no antibiotics ever.

August 18th- Thyroid test in-house Level- 2.1 29th day off Soloxine. (Anything under 1 is low.) Ostrich place said protein level in balanced diet is too low. Not eating well. Turning away from his food. Gave water at night to hydrate. Poop was small and hard, then more normal at the end. 1 small Wellness fish/sweetpotato biscuit. |
||
| August 16th- Vomited... Darby had a few days ago, Emma and Bumble today. Possibly from the decayed grass clippings/brush that was hauled out... they had a hole in their tarp and it left a skid mark from the front to the back of the property. Cycled sprinklers twice to wash down. Bacteria? | ||
| August 15th- Bath today with Duoxo. No sores. Happy, wiggly boy is back. But feels oily (according to Chris & Jim). Played in the house with Kubby. Much more itchy. Ragweed season is here but don't know if that makes any difference. | ||
|
August 12th: He is
horribly lethargic much of the time but can chase Meesha or Bell at
times too. Very tired after this romp with Bell. Difficult to get
him on his feet when he wakes up... wants to lie down.
DAY 1- Pre-Mix added to meal. Added 1/4 cup freeze dried mix to water and gave to him at lunch. Added the same to his later meal along with more water. Seldom drinks water... peed little. Gums felt drier than they should be. Bumped up amount of ostrich on August 13th. |

Found a reference that stated iodine deficiency could cause high TSH...
_______________________________________________________________________ Introduction Cruciferous or Brassica vegetables are so named because they come from plants in the family known to botanists as Cruciferae or alternately, Brassicaceae. Many commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables come from the Brassica genus, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, turnips, bok choy, and Chinese cabbage (1). Arugula, horse radish, radish, wasabi, and watercress are also cruciferous vegetables. Iodine and Thyroid Function Very high intakes of cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage and turnips, have been found to cause hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone) in animals (68). There has been one case report of an 88-year-old woman developing severe hypothyroidism and coma following consumption of an estimated 1.0 to 1.5 kg/day of raw bok choy for several months (69). Two mechanisms have been identified to explain this effect. The hydrolysis of some glucosinolates found in cruciferous vegetables (e.g., progoitrin) may yield a compound known as goitrin, which has been found to interfere with thyroid hormone synthesis. The hydrolysis of another class of glucosinolates, known as indole glucosinolates, results in the release of thiocyanate ions, which can compete with iodine for uptake by the thyroid gland. Increased exposure to thiocyanate ions from cruciferous vegetable consumption or, more commonly, from cigarette smoking, does not appear to increase the risk of hypothyroidism unless accompanied by iodine deficiency. One study in humans found that the consumption of 150 g/day (5 oz/day) of cooked Brussels sprouts for four weeks had no adverse effects on thyroid function (70). 68. Fenwick GR, Heaney RK, Mullin WJ. August 3rd- Thyroid test in-house Level- 2.5 Retest in 2 weeks- August 18th @ 9:20am |

| Food allergy might
explain the pyoderma prior to his normal thyroid profile in April
2010. Hypothyroidism and food allergy might explain his pyoderma while on the food trial. Environmental and seasonal allergies could still play a roll in it too. Coat is feeling kind of funky... Dr. J thought it felt greasy. But bath is late because I wanted her to "experience" his coat condition without a bath. Bath today with Duoxo. Food: 2 3/4 pounds red skin golden yukon potatoes and 3/4 pound ostrich.
Thiocyanates
- inhibit iodine uptake by the thyroid --> leading to
reduced iodination of tyrosine --> resulting in
decreased production of the important thyroid hormone
thyroxine.
However, it has not been
proven that a diet of these foods would be goitrogenic
unless they comprised an excessively high proportion of
the diet, a substantial amount of them were eaten raw,
or they were not well cooked. Although goitrogens in
foods are largely destroyed by thorough cooking, it must
be acknowledged that many of the foods listed above are
eaten uncooked (Coon 1975).
Iodine deficiency Question: So does cooking rutabagas destroy or inactivate the compound making it totally harmless? |

see black spots all over his coat where new hair has started to
regrow. Wednesday is the last day of Soloxine.
Appointment to talk with Dr. Erlewein on Thursday... (said 3-4 weeks
is a better time frame to retest thyroid).
2 1/2 lbs potatos to 1/2 pound ostrich for the past 4 days... plus supplements. |

Starting 100% redskin potatoes. 1/4 ostrich to 3/4 potato.

| July 9th Bath today with
Duoxo. Are russet potatoes high in starch which could lead to yeast issues? Picking up red skin potatoes and swapping out. http://www.thecookingdish.com/the-brown-russet-potato-vs-the-red-potato/ Red potatoes have less starch and more sugars than the russet potatoes (and are therefore stickier). But the MSU elimination diet from February mentions white or red so we'll mix them. |

| 4 | July 6th- 0.6mg Soloxine 1x daily for 7 days. 0.3mg Soloxine 1x every OTHER day for 7 days. Switching from rutabaga and introducing potato (russet).

July 6th ...However, these isothiocyanates, like the isoflavones in soy, reduce thyroid function by blocking the activity of thyroid peroxidase. So if you think that your dog might be suffering from a thyroid problem, don’t pile on the cabbage or cauliflower or any of the other veggies listed below: ...RUTABAGA...” A little is OK, a lot – i.e. like you’re feeding may be a problem. I never knew a dog fed exclusively on ostrich and rutabaga ! Phytochemistry Rutabagas and other cyanoglucoside-containing foods (including cassava, maize, bamboo shoots, sweet potatoes, and lima beans) release cyanide, which is subsequently detoxified into thiocyanate. Thiocyanate inhibits thyroid iodide transport and, at high doses, competes with iodide in the organification process within thyroid tissue. Goitres may develop when there is a dietary imbalance of thiocyanate-containing food in excess of iodine consumption, and it is possible for these compounds to contribute to hypothyroidism.Yet, there have been no reports of ill effects in humans from the consumption of glucosinolates from normal amounts of Brassica vegetables. Glucosinolate content in Brassica vegetables is estimated to be around one percent of dry matter. These compounds are also responsible for the bitter taste of rutabagas. Getting him off rutabagas. Had an appointment with Dr. J today and asked her opinion on the top passage and whether we could transition him over to potatoes. We are going to discontinue the Soloxine over 2 weeks and replace rutabaga with potato during this time too. Wait two weeks when off soloxine and rutabagas and then run a full thyroid profile again to see if he's truly hypothyroid. Heard back from Dr. Dodds... rutabagas can cause a problem. |

Soloxine.
